Over the Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-27, 2013, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Kickstart Consulting, St. Vincent's took part in the annual I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival at the Santa Barbara Mission on Laguna Street.
Rachel Fanucchi (left), a graduate of St. Vincent's Family Strengthening Program, who participated with her daughter last year in the Young Artists section, teamed up with Rima Villarreal (right), currently in St. Vincent's Family Strengthening Program, to create and design St. Vincent's square.
Before the festival, Rima and Rachel drew their vision for St. Vincent's square. Their goal was to show the natural beauty of St. Vincent's multicultural and intergenerational campus as it is today. At the festival, they used the drawing above as their guide and reference.
The collaboration begins.
The artists at work
Rima focuses on the hawk . . .
. . . while Rachel works on the hummingbird.
The creative process is now under way.
Rachel 's sunflower takes shape.
The outline of the woman is under way.
A fellow artist stops by with words of encouragement.
Out come the kneepads.
Progress continues at a good pace.
A blessing with incense and feathers from Father Charles Talley, OFM, Pastor of St. Barbara Parish (left) and Father Larry Gosselin, OFM, Associate Pastor of St. Barbara Parish, (right) for St. Vincent's gifted artists.
Father Charles gives Rima a special blessing.
Checking in before the artistic process continues
How does the vision . . .
. . . compare with the reality?
Finished ahead of schedule . . .
. . . and pleased with the result and also the positive feedback from the public.
Our sincere thanks to both of you, Rachel and Rima, for your masterpiece. The square is beautiful. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. God bless you both.
